Rose Bowles' Datenut Bread

1/2 lb. dates

1 tsp soda

1 cup hot water

1 egg

3/4 cup sugar

3 Tbsp margarine, melted

1 3/4 cup flour

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp cream of tartar

1/2 cup nuts

1 tsp vanilla

Pour water over dates and soda. Let cool. Beat egg, sugar, melted margarine. Sift together flour, salt, cream of tartar. Add dates, nuts and vanilla.

Bake at 350 for 1 hour. (Aunt Be bakes at 325 for 55 mins.)
